Nuuly

Nuuly, a monthly clothing rental subscription service, reached out to me to collaborate on something that felt free and adventurous. The only ask was to frame the animation within the silhouetted shape of Nuul’s beloved shipping bag and include a depiction of the bag itself in the sequence. The opening frame would begin by saying, "Please tilt your screen," so that the phone would lie horizontally.

With such an open brief, I had an incredible amount of fun creating a continuous camera move, panning through environments of human-like fish and birds leaping out of the screen.

Both versions have the exact same animation timing. There are 12 drawings for every second of animation, but they’re two different stages of the animation process.

The top is the final, cleaned-up animation: each element is redrawn with one continuous line and then colored in.

The bottom is the digital pencil stage, where I can draw much more loosely and quickly to work out the characters’ movements, actions, and pacing.

Once the timing and movement are locked, I redraw, essentially tracing everything cleanly on a new layer, keeping the line weight consistent throughout the piece.
